There are 150 places for boys at Queen Mary's Grammar School for entry to Year 7 in September 2019 Admission is based on the results of the School’s Entrance Test. We administer the Test as part of a Consortium of grammar schools in Shropshire, Walsall & Wolverhampton. Information about the Consortium can be found from the link below.

To be considered for a place at this School, parents / their sons must complete the following:

1. Parents must apply to the School/Consortium to take the Entrance Test
2. Boys must sit the Entrance Test
3. Parents must complete a separate application to their home Local Authority listing Queen Mary's Grammar School as a preference


1. Application to the School/Consortium to take the Entrance Test

Boys can only take the School/Consortium Entrance Test once.

The deadline for applications to apply to the School to sit the test was Friday, 6th July 2018. Applications after this date are dealt with in accordance with the rules for late applications, as set out in our Admissions Arrangements (these can be found below).

Applications to sit the Entrance Test have to be made using the Consortium’s online applications portal. As candidates applying late to the School can only be considered for a place via our waiting list, a late test will be arranged in March 2019 for all those candidates who applied late, unless the reasons for their late application are deemed exceptional as per the Admissions Arrangements.

The applications portal has now been closed, but will reopen for late applications in January 2019. Please refer back to this page on our website which will be updated at that time.

2. Taking the Entrance Test

The main Entrance Test is on Monday 17th September 2018, with a late test for candidates who applied late, being scheduled for March 2019.

The Test comprises two papers of about an hour each, which assess verbal reasoning/English literacy, non-verbal reasoning, and Mathematics. Admission to the School is based on performance in the Test.

Questions for the Entrance Test are contained in a question booklet and candidates are required to write their answers on a separate answer sheet. The familiarisation booklet below is designed to inform candidates and parents about the Entrance Test.

For entry into Year 7 in September 2019, a number of places will be allocated to Looked After / Pupil Premium children, whose scores exceed a minimum qualifying score. Further details can be found in our Admissions Arrangements (below).


3. Applications to your home Local Authority Applications

Applications to the Local Authority need to be completed in accordance with your home Local Authority’s application process. This may be online or by completing their Preference/Common Application Form. We expect the deadline for parent applications to their home Local Authority to be on or around 31st October 2018. Places are allocated by parents’ home Local Authority, on or around 1st March 2019. Parents must check their own Local Authority’s deadlines.



The timetable for admissions in September 2019 is as follows:

• Admissions arrangements determined – 28th February 2018
• Online applications available – from April 2018
• There were open evening/open morning events in June/July 2018
• Closing date for applications to the School to sit the Test – Friday 6th July 2018
• Entrance Test day – Monday 17th September 2018
• Open afternoon events Tuesday 16th and Monday 22nd October 2018
• Test results posted to parents – October 2018 (date to be confirmed)
• Parents must complete their Local Authority application – 31st October 2018 (please check)


Special Arrangements

Special arrangements may be agreed for children who satisfy the Governors that they have special education needs, or suffer from disability. Parents who wish to request special arrangements must complete a separate form. The School will require independent medical/other evidence supporting the application. All requests must be sent to the School before the deadline for online applications (as above). Further details will be available in due course.


Pupil Premium

Children attracting Pupil Premium at the time of the test who achieve the qualifying score will be admitted (subject to a maximum of 30 pupils). The School will require evidence of your son’s eligibility for Pupil Premium following your application from your Local Authority or your son’s Primary School. No proof will be accepted after the test. The onus is on parents / carers to provide this information before the test.

Year 7 Admissions for entry in September 2018

There are 150 places for boys available at Queen Mary's Grammar School for entry to year 7 in September 2018. Admission is based on the results of the School’s Entrance Test. We administer the Test as part of a Consortium of grammar schools in Shropshire, Walsall & Wolverhampton. The Entrance Test was held in September 2017. Parents also had to list this School as one of their preferences when completing their Local Authority application forms.

The School informed parents of their son’s Test result in October 2017. The actual allocation of places is managed by the candidate’s home Local Authority, in a coordinated admissions scheme with other Local Authorities. Local Authority allocations were notified to parents on 1st March 2018.

Parents should not contact the school to find out if their son has been offered a place, as places are allocated by their home Local Authority and all enquiries should be directed to your home Local Authority.

For boys who sat the Test and were allocated a place at another school by their Local Authority, their names will automatically go on the school’s waiting list if Queen Mary's Grammar School was included as a higher preference on the Local Authority application. The waiting list is maintained by Walsall Council’s School Admissions team (01922 652585). If initial offers to the school are declined for whatever reason, then places will become available to boys on the waiting list in accordance with our Admissions Arrangements (see below). The waiting list will be available around the middle of March 2018 and is maintained until 31st December 2018. See Admissions Arrangements for further details.
